Two incomplete sets of the same system frequently make one generous complete one at a fraction of the price of buying new. This is the standard way experienced buyers build up a large collection.

Systems still in continuous production, such as tinkertoys, are the easiest to do this with, since current parts are compatible with older ones and gaps can be filled with a new set rather than hunting for specific components.

Cleaning What You Buy

Everything gets washed before it joins the household. Plastic parts wash in warm soapy water and must be dried thoroughly, particularly anything hollow that traps water.

Wooden parts should be wiped rather than soaked, since soaking raises the grain and can loosen joints. A dishwasher is generally a bad idea for either, given the heat and detergent.

The Vintage Caution

Genuinely old sets may predate current safety standards, particularly regarding paint. Anything with worn or flaking paint of uncertain age is better treated as a display item than handed to a young child.

Current production sets carry none of these concerns, which is a reasonable argument for buying new for a toddler and second-hand for an older child.

Nursery and school clear-outs occasionally produce large quantities at once, which is the best possible outcome for anyone wanting bulk.

What to Buy New Instead

Anything where completeness matters for a first experience, since a child given an incomplete set as their introduction may conclude the toy does not work.

Otherwise, second-hand is a straightforwardly good option, and the toys that appear repeatedly in the second-hand market are themselves a reliable guide to which systems are worth owning.
