How Do I Get a Handle on My Social Media Addiction?

I’m starting to realize that I have a pretty serious social media addiction on my phone. Right now, it’s a scrolling selector, meaning you xvlust.com scroll to a number of minutes between one and 30, but for a brief period a few weeks ago, the app offered up pre-determined values of two minutes or five minutes. I’d opt for five minutes of unblocked time, see that deduction from my bank, open Instagram, and… Basically, even though I end each week with plenty of minutes built up in my bank, I’ve still actively elected not to spend as much time on my blocked apps. I don’t need to play Project Makeover for longer than 10 minutes and having to set a time limit forces me to think about that.

You undo your streak by removing an app from your blocked list or changing your preferences around how many steps give you a minute of app access or how long your banked minutes last before resetting. My earned time resets weekly, meaning steps I took yesterday still apply to today’s banked time, but you can set it to reset daily or never, too. If you’re someone who doesn’t get a lot of time to walk in the day, you can use the app on its lowest settings, trading 25 steps for a minute of app time, and still get the benefits. As your phone or fitness tracker detects steps, they get converted into minutes that you bank and can then convert back into time to unlock your apps. Even just 3 hours a day over the course of year adds up to (and prepare yourself for this) 45 full days on your phone.

    • “In the past few hours, my IG Reels feed has suddenly started showing violent or disturbing videos out of nowhere.
    • Steppin is the most innovative and useful app blocker I’ve tried, since it doesn’t just prevent you from accessing the apps that waste your time.
    • But Steppin could include a lot more than just new versions, functionality tweaks, or streaks over time.
    • What I really like, though, is having to pre-determine how many minutes I give myself when accessing blocked apps.

Spending a couple of hours every day on your phone may seem like definitely the norm these days — and it probably is for most people! I’m looking forward to the day when, say, my minutes of reading or other forms of exercise count toward my banked minutes, depending on which direction English and his team take with future updates, but for now, I’m enjoying using it as-is. This could be a detriment for some, since you might not appreciate losing a streak because you’re configuring the settings in a way that works best for you, or in the case that you might even need unfettered access to an app for some reason. Most weeks, I end up with between 10 or 15 hours of banked, unused time before the reset hits. What I really like, though, is having to pre-determine how many minutes I give myself when accessing blocked apps.

Since downloading Steppin, I haven’t given myself more than 10 minutes at one time. For instance, if I open Instagram and set a 10-minute unblock duration, I can leave Insta and fire up Project Makeover within that same time frame. I find myself getting off the bus a few stops early, choosing to walk to the father post office to drop off my Poshmark sales, and generally seeking out more opportunities to get my steps in. A few times this summer, that’s resulted in me opting to walk home from a Saturday night outing instead of taking the bus or calling an Uber.

I’ve heard of some people even going so far as to buy actual boxes and lock their phone in for periods of time. On iPhones, you can head into your settings and mute all notifications from an entire app wholesale. And nope, it doesn’t have to be when you’re asleep — it can be any set of hours you don’t want distraction.

    What’s happening with Instagram Reels?

You’re encouraged to get your steps in and you can still enjoy the fun apps—in moderation. Enter Steppin, a completely free iPhone app that, like plenty of others, blocks access to distracting apps. None of that is particularly good for me, and watching it over and over stops me from getting things done in my real life, though I do really love those marshmallow videos. I love to be productive, I love to exercise, but I also love (or at least find myself) getting sucked into marathon Reels-bingeing sessions on Instagram.

If you get hard for amateur girls who love to show their dripping wet cunts and tight assholes, then you’ve hit the jackpot. We’re talking about real, filthy nude pics where these gorgeous babes aren’t just posing—they’re getting off, spreading their pussies wide, and fucking themselves silly for the camera. Two Thai women take turns sucking then fucking a tourist until he fills them up with cum

The only issue with these is that they’re pretty easy to just ignore. There are tons of apps out there you can download to help curb your social media addiction. Apple provides different focus modes for your phone when you swipe down from the top of your home screen. You can then create a “sleep” mode and choose the hours you don’t want any alerts. This will prevent it from throwing out a notification every time someone else sends a link, asks a question, or replies to something. You can tap the chat name and press the “bell” button to mute the entire chat.

(If you ask me, a daily reset is for true self-improvement sickos and choosing to never reset it is the cheap way out. Weekly is the way to go!) When you use Steppin, you can trade your steps for minutes on your blocked apps at any time. I started using Steppin five months ago so I could write a review, but I ended up enjoying it so much that I’m now on a 158-day streak. Some folks even just delete their problem apps during the work day so they can at least concentrate on productivity during business hours. That gets tricky, of course, because accidents and emergencies do pop up, and you may want 24/7 instantaneous access to your phone.

Steppin incorporates streaks, so every day you use it, you add another day to your streak. Before Steppin, that would have led to at least 10 minutes of me scrolling through other memes, which is what Instagram wants me to do (and, honestly, what I kind of want to do, too). When a friend DMs me a funny meme on Instagram, I only set one minute for myself to open it, view it, and respond.

She spent most of her pre-Lifehacker career covering media and politics for outlets like Us Weekly, CNN, The Daily Dot, Mashable, Glamour, and InStyle. Steppin works by forcing you to trade real-life activity for access to your most distracting apps.
